Comment fonctionne l'assurance auto ?

Comprendre l'assurance auto, s'assurer d’un bord ou des deux, quel déductible devrais-je avoir...? L’assurance automobile n’a rien de compliqué mais quand on ne comprend pas le langage, c’est bien difficile de s’y retrouver.

Commençons par le début.

Assurance obligatoire

Au Québec, l’assurance automobile est obligatoire pour tous les conducteurs. Le minimum requis par la loi est une couverture en responsabilité civile qui vous protégera si vous causez des dommages à d’autres véhicules ou à des structures, en percutant un immeuble par exemple. Ici, on vous conseille de prendre un montant de 1 ou de 2 millions de dollars.

Accident corporel

Le volet responsabilité civile exclut d’office tous les dommages corporels causés sur une voie publique. Le gouvernement du Québec prend en charge toutes ses dépenses et les intègre au coût de renouvellement du permis et de l’immatriculation. Si vous blessez quelqu’un ou que vous êtes blessé au Québec, vos dommages seront couverts par la Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec.

Un bord ou deux bords

Voilà une expression qui n’a rien de scientifique mais qui ne semble pas vouloir disparaître. Un véhicule assuré « d’un bord » est assuré pour les dommages qu’il cause, mais non pour les dommages au véhicule. Si vous louez un véhicule ou le financez, vous n’aurez pas le choix de l’assurer « des deux bords », une exigence des compagnies de financement.

Accidents sans collision

C’est ainsi que l’on nomme la protection accordée contre les dommages au véhicule en cas de feu, vol, vandalisme et bris de vitres. Même si vous avez un véhicule de plus de 10 ans, ce genre de protection peut vous évitez des ennuis et elle n’est pas dispendieuse. Vous devrez faire inspecter le véhicule cependant, selon l’âge et la marque du véhicule, à la demande de l’assureur avant de pouvoir être couvert.

Collision

La convention d’indemnisation directe (http://www.gaa.qc.ca/fr/cid-en-bref) établit la responsabilité des conducteurs en utilisant des barèmes bien précis. Ainsi, dans le premier cas cité, si deux véhicules ont une collision en circulant dans la même voie, la responsabilité sera attribuée à 100% au conducteur du deuxième véhicule. La couverture collision vous permet de faire réparer votre véhicule si vous êtes jugé responsable de l’accident. Elle est conseillée pour tous les véhicules récents et obligatoire aussi si vous louez ou financez votre véhicule auprès d’une compagnie de financement.

Franchise

Parlons des vraies choses, la franchise est le montant que vous êtes prêt à débourser en cas de réclamation. Le plus la franchise est basse, le plus la prime est élevée. Inversement, pour économiser, vous pouvez faire augmenter vos franchises.
